Robert F. Heizer was born in Colorado. He received his B.A. (1936) and Ph. D. (1941) degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught in Oregon (1940-1941) and California (1945-1976). Heizer was active in archaeological and anthropological fieldwork in Alaska with Dr. Ales Hrdlicka (1934-1935), and at numerous other sites in the United States and other countries. C. Hart Merriam was a biologist who work for the Smithsonian Institution from 1910-1939. Merriam was born December 5, 1855 in New York City. His childhood was spent in Locust Grove, Lewis County, New York.
